Pedometer Loan Program
Thanks to a partnership between the Cascade County Physical Activity Council, the Great Falls Public Library and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, residents of Cascade County can borrow pedometer kits for 30 days at a time. During your next library visit, check out a pedometer at the library's Front Desk and see how your daily steps compare to suggested goals. The U.S. Surgeon General reports that a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking, on most days of the week can produce long-term health benefits. The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports recommends at least 30 minutes a day, on 5 or more days a week, or 10,000 steps daily measured by a pedometer. Not everyone can achieve 10,000 steps a day; but almost everyone can find ways to build walking into each day to accumulate at least 30 minutes of physical activity. If you can’t walk for 30 minutes at one time, take 5-, 10-, or 15-minute walks throughout the day. It all adds up to better health. While at the library, use your card to check out a book, cassette tape or DVD that supports your goal of walking more. To see what the library offers, search the Great Falls Public Library on-line catalog, using "walking" as your search term and "subject" as your type of search. You'll find more than 45 items to borrow from the library's collection. Take a walk today! Plenty of help getting started is available online. |
